Some questions on Russia versus Ukraine.
It’s come to my attention that there’s a lot of footage out there of Russians using coercion at the front line on their own soldiers. Mobilizing soldiers with crutches, humiliating desertors in holes, using stopping lines to shoot desertors, that sort of thing. I thought it was propaganda, but seems to be true. What’s more, I can’t find any Ukranian equivalent of that kind of coercion at the front lines. Lots of footage of press gangs far away from the front lines, yes, but nothing at the front lines.
So to anyone willing to lend their insights – how much of this is true? Why don’t we have equivalent footage of Ukranian force at the front line? I can’t rhyme the Ukranian press gangs with that – one would imagine that if force is used to send someone to the front line, force is used to keep someone at the front line. Is it fog of war? And what’s up with Russians sending soldiers with crutches? Is that dumb bureaucracy? Why would they need that if they have enough people signing up?
Yeah, soldiers with crutches are walking miles under fire to reach enemy positions successfully, they are just that good. In fact, if you don’t need crutches the army doesn’t accept you, cause it would be too easy. Does it even really count as a win, if you didn’t do it in crutches?

So either they were not speaking Russian, or were not talking about what the translator had them saying. I immediately came to the perhaps biased conclusion that these guys were not Russians, nor could they speak Russian, nor was the video shot in Eastern Europe.

The Russian army has a lot of volunteers. Each of those volunteers knows lots of other people on the front line, because a substantial part of the social groups from which recruitment is coming is on the front line.
So they know what is propaganda, and what is not.
The Ukrainian army has to drag people off the streets. The war has been going for years. So everyone in the groups that are heading to the front lines know what is up.
We have overwhelming evidence of Ukrainians just doing flat out fraud for propaganda purposes. We have no similar evidence of duplicity from Russia.
So, the reason you don’t see this stuff from the Ukrainian front lines is that it is all taking place in a movie studio located in Western Europe, Canada, or the US.

Anyone that knows post-Soviet military structures past and present knows they are not what we would call engines of either efficiency or good times. There’s a lot of brutality in terms of their institutional culture and how they treat the average soldier/conscript. Regardless, the Russians are still a lethal fighting force and one that has continued to learn from its mistakes early on in this war. When you have a working set of steps, you can restart the notebook and run the working blocks one by one to get your result.

I don’t agree with this framing. Try substituting the phrase “sola scriptura” with “the second amendment” and consider where the same logic leads. If the possibility of physical violence is a useful stabilizing element against tyranny then so is the possibility of debate, theological or otherwise.
Yes, sola scriptura carries risks of heresies and schisms, but it’s also the first line of defense against holiness spiraling and eventually kritarchy. The Jews are not following sola scriptura in their holiness spiraling; they are doing the opposite, doing what modern judges are doing with the U.S. constitution, finding penumbras and emanations that are clearly not in the text yet somehow far more important and pure than anything in the text.
And in a sense, sola scriptura is just basic literacy. When you have an actual bible, and the laymen can actually read it, then widespread expectation of adhering to the text is simply an outcome you are going to have – unless you want to travel back in time to the days before the printing press, and have a state religion dependent on no one but the high priest knowing what the scripture actually says. If everyone knows what the scripture says, then there is always going to be a segment who won’t tolerate “innovation”. There already is today with the laity of the Catholic church, where a large and growing sect says they’re not bound to obey a heretical pope, and how do you know if the pope is a heretic?
I think you’re conflating the principle with antinomianism, or maybe the protestant idea of “grace”, which are indeed huge problems that need to be rooted out and carefully guarded against by any state religion. But the principle that priests are supposed to follow what’s in the text and not just make shit up as they go along and call it a “new tradition”, that is totally sound. To the extent it’s weaponizable – well, we don’t simply destroy all our weapons in peacetime, because peace doesn’t last forever, peace needs to be maintained, and you maintain peace partly by having an effective deterrent to further war.
By the way, I am not saying I’m against church hierarchy. I simply don’t think it’s mutually exclusive or incompatible with the principle of sola scriptura, which members of the hypothetical hierarchy should be following themselves. It’s not much different from having a manager or CO whose directives you are expected to follow, yet also having a set of laws and regulations and a code of conduct specifying when you must refuse and report said manager. In a priestly hierarchy, the scripture is that code; it’s as much a tool for the priests themselves as it is for the laymen, if not more so.
Grace is a problem because it is very close to the antinomian heresy, and it is hard to tell the difference. Holyness spiral grace a tiny bit, and you get antinomianism. But antinomianism has not been a problem for a while. There are no antinomian Churches and never have been. It is only a problem in that every now and then you have to purge an antinomian pastor.
These days, they don’t purge anyone, but I don’t see a substantial antinomian heresy.

It was a form of amok, in a sense, but the actual plan was executed so well that it achieved some of its intended results. Generally that does not happen and the amok causes more harm than good, but Breivik was relatively competent (and had the right targets) so it ended up as a partial success.
Imagine if, instead of posting on Jim’s Blog, I would show up at a random Mosque and slaughter a bunch of Palestinians. That would be Israeli amok. Violence should ideally be organized and have a proper aim, or else it’s (usually) counterproductive.
If you’re living under a hostile (and still powerful) regime, you should ask yourself, “How can I make this regime weaker rather than stronger?” Generally speaking, killing a bunch of uninvolved people will not make the regime any weaker.

But my sense of the history is that the Anglicans who the Orthodox had the most dealings with were the less Protestant sort, and the realization that they represented only a minority of Anglicans meant that serious efforts at union petered out. And of course, the ordination of women changed the tenor of the relationship between the churches completely. The most lasting effect of the 1920s is the establishment of Western Rite parishes in some Orthodox dioceses.

the idea is that you look at the current situation, extrapolate, predict the end state, and concede the war goals in advance of the end state. A settlement obviously would require concession of war goals. Zelensky considers giving up territory, demilitarisation etc, non-negotiable. If he is not a rational actor, there is no negotiation to be had, no concession, and no end to the war until it concludes. It is not Trump’s fault if he failed to make a deal between two parties when one is irrational
